The ceremony of unveiling the bust of Yuri Gagarin in Ethiopia

On November 28, 2018 the bust of Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut in human history, was inaugurated in Addis Ababa. The solemn ceremony was organized by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Ethiopia, the Russian Association for International Cooperation (RAIC), Charity Fund “Dialogue of Cultures – United World” with the support of the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute, the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of the FDRE and Addis Ababa city Administration. The event was timed to the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia.

The Minister of Innovation and Technology of the FDRE Dr. Eng. Getahun Mekuria, H.E. Mr. Vsevolod Tkachenko, Ambassador of the Russian Federation, the Director of the ESSTI Dr. Solomon Belay and the Secretary General of RAIC Mr. Vladimir Polozkov addressed the public on the occasion.

The Minister of Innovation and Technology of the FDRE in his welcoming statement expressed gratitude to the Russian Embassy for organizing the event. He emphasized the role of Y.Gagarin in the opening of Space Age in the history of humanity and commended the contribution of Soviet and Russian science to space research and development of space technologies. The Minister suggested intensifying cooperation between the two countries in the sphere of education, space studies and engineering including the collaboration between universities and scientific centers and institutions. The Russian Ambassador supported this initiative and affirmed the readiness of the Russian Embassy to provide all necessary assistance for the realization of such partnership projects.

V.Polozkov also greeted the participants and conveyed welcoming letters of the Chairman of the Presidium of RAIC S. Kalashnikov, the President of the Fund “Dialogue of Cultures – United World” R.Bayramov and Russian cosmonaut V.Tokarev.

Representatives of diplomatic corps, the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, Ethiopian Biotechnology Institute, Ethiopian Innovation and Technology Institute, Ethiopian Radiation and Protection Agency, National Meteorology Agency, Ethiopian Aeronautical Association and universities were also present at the ceremony.

The event was widely covered by the local media: is was attended by the reporters of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), Addis Ababa Mass Media Agency (AAMMA), Fana Broadcasting, Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
