About the celebration of the Day of the Russian language in UNECA Addis Ababa, June 6, 2019
On June 6, the Embassy of Russia in Ethiopia, jointly with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), held a solemn event on the occasion of the Day of the Russian Language, dedicated to the birthday of A.S.Pushkin.
The celebration was attended by representatives of the Embassy, the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Addis Ababa, as well as staff of UNECA. A photo exhibition dedicated to the history of Russian literature and UNESCO objects in Russia, as well as a fair of Russian souvenirs were organized.
The head of the UNAECA publications, conferences and knowledge management section A.A.Cisse conveyed to the participants the greetings and good wishes of the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UNECA, V.Songe. In his speech, A.A.Sisse focused on the role of multilingualism in the UN.
The Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Evgeny Terekhin in his speech noted the unique significance of the Russian language for the entire world civilization. In this context, the Ambassador stressed the unacceptability of attempts of the authorities in several countries to prohibit their Russian-speaking citizens to speak their native language.
Noting the role of A.S.Pushkin in the national culture, the Ambassador recalled the connection of the great poet with his historical ancestral homeland - Ethiopia, and quoted in Amharic his poem “Under the sky of my Africa...”. The guests of the event warmly welcomed the performance of the Russian amateur artistic group “Fatherland”.
