Inauguration of the direct flight connecting Russia and Ethiopia
On December 17 a solemn ceremony of the inauguration of the direct air connection between Moscow and Addis Ababa was held in the international airport of the Ethiopian capital “Bole International” and was attended by many honorable guests, including the Ambassador of the Russian Federation H.E. Vsevolod I. Tkachenko, the Executive director of “Ethiopian Airlines” Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church H.H. Abuna Mattias and the representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the FDRE and the employees of “Ethiopian Airlines”.
CEO of “Ethiopian Airlines”, the company, which was recognized as the best carrier on African continent, delivered an opening speech. He noted that the rapid expansion of the flights net of the company all over the world favors social and economic growth of Ethiopia, revitalization of commercial and investment links, facilitates intergovernmental relations, business-to-business contacts and grants new opportunities for cultural exchange and tourism. In case of Russia it is very important, since the direct air connection with Moscow is one of the essential steps to activate the century-long relations. Mr. Tevolde Gebremariam stated that despite all the technical challenges posed by the direct flight, this destination is still highly perspective and opens new opportunities not only for the company itself but also for the peoples of the two countries. He thanked the Embassy of Russia in Ethiopia for the assistance provided in the realization of this project.
The Ambassador of Russia also addressed the participants of the ceremony. He commended mutual efforts of the two parties in the process of preparation of the first in 27 years direct flight between the two capitals. He appreciated that despite all the difficulties it became possible to achieve success and build another bridge, connecting our countries, which celebrate 120 years of diplomatic relations. He also suggested examining the possibility of launching flights to other big cities of Russia in future and on behalf of the Russian Embassy expressed readiness to support further initiatives on developing bilateral relations.
After the guests’ remarks Patriarch Abuna Mattias consecrated the departure of the plain on the board of which accompanied by a church delegation he set off to Moscow for a private visit.
Boing 787-8 Dreamliner departured from Addis Ababa at 23:35 and landed in Moscow’s airport Domodedovo at 7:00, thus, opening a new page in the history of Russian-Ethiopian cooperation.
