Exhibition on 120 years of Russia-Ethiopia relations

On April 23, the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University hosted the exhibition dedicated to the 120th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia. The exposition prepared by the Russian Embassy included photos and archive documents on the history of bilateral ties as well as paintings by Evgeny Senigov depicting Abyssinian life in early XX century.

Inaugurating the display, Ambassador Vsevolod Tkachenko noted profound cultural and spiritual affinity that Russian and Ethiopian people share. He stressed that “Ethiopia has always been a valuable and reliable partner of Russia despite all political, economic and social challenges that we faced”. He extended gratitude to the University of Addis Ababa for hosting the exhibition and “offering its students an opportunity to learn more about the glorious history of Ethio-Russia relations”.

Guest of honor, Mr. Meles Alem, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia pointed out that “Throughout their centuries-old historic relationship, Ethiopia and Russia have been working together on the principle of respect of the sovereignty and independence of states in international relations”. He acknowledged that “Russia consistently supported Ethiopia in its struggle to defend sovereignty against colonial encroachment”. According to Ethiopian diplomat, thousands of his compatriots “who studied in various Russian universities are serving as a bridge to the people-to-people relations of both countries”.

Dr. Ahmed Zakaria, Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies reaffirmed the profound interest by Ethiopian public in Russian history and culture.

The exposition is opened for public during next three weeks.
